Preventing Suicide Is Everyone’s Business
Suicide prevention training is part of firearm safety and basic firearm first aid. Just as firearm owners learn safe handling, secure storage, and how to respond in an emergency, we can also learn how to recognize when someone may be in crisis and how to help create time, distance, and support.
We don’t let our friends drink and drive. Many of us are comfortable taking someone’s car keys when they are not safe to get behind the wheel. We can think about firearm safety in a similar way when someone is in crisis. Protecting our families, friends, and fellow firearm owners includes knowing when temporary safety steps may be needed.
Just like CPR prepares people to respond during a medical emergency, suicide prevention training prepares people to respond during a mental health crisis. Training helps people recognize warning signs earlier, ask direct and supportive questions, connect someone to help, and consider options like temporary out-of-home firearm storage during a difficult time.
Sometimes support looks like checking in on a friend, helping someone find resources, encouraging them to talk with a health care professional, or helping create time and distance from firearms until the crisis passes. These small actions can reduce risk and save lives.
