Safe Life Oregon and Healthcare Workers

Safe Life Oregon is a statewide initiative that connects individuals and families with voluntary, temporary firearm storage options during times of increased risk, such as mental health crises, suicidal ideation, substance use relapse, major life stressors, or other periods when extra safety planning is needed.

The project works with trusted firearm retailers and partners across Oregon who are willing to provide temporary storage so that individuals can create time and distance between themselves and firearms during difficult periods, while maintaining their firearm ownership.

For therapists, crisis workers, medical providers, and other health care professionals, Safe Life Oregon provides a practical, real-world resource you can offer when working with clients who have access to firearms and are experiencing suicide risk or significant emotional distress.

Many providers want to talk about lethal means safety but are unsure what options exist in the community. Safe Life Oregon helps fill that gap by providing information on safe storage options, locations that may offer temporary storage, and guidance on how to talk with clients and families about voluntary storage as part of safety planning.

This resource can be especially helpful when:

  • A client is experiencing suicidal thoughts
  • A client is going through a mental health crisis
  • A client is entering substance use treatment or early recovery
  • A family is concerned about a loved one’s safety
  • A client is experiencing a major life crisis (divorce, job loss, legal issues, grief, etc.)
  • A court order requires temporary firearm storage

How can Safe Life Oregon help you?

The goal of Safe Life Oregon is not to take firearms away from lawful owners, but to provide voluntary, temporary storage options that help keep people safe during high-risk periods. Research shows that many suicide attempts occur during short-term crises, and creating time and distance from lethal means can save lives.

Health care professionals can use the Safe Life Oregon website as a resource for:

  • Safety planning conversations
  • Lethal means counseling
  • Crisis response planning
  • Family support conversations
  • Court order and ERPO situations
  • Community resource referrals

By working together, health care providers, firearm retailers, law enforcement, and public health partners can create a practical, community-based approach to suicide prevention that respects firearm ownership while helping keep people safe during times of need.
